Has capitalism and free trade failed us or did we fail capitalism and free trade?

I have read the various investigative reports on what the banks were up to in the housing and capital markets in the last decade.

It turns your stomach.

Reckless, irresponsible, and, just plain stupid, is what was practiced, all for cash that really built nothing, and has collapsed like a spider’s web in the wind.

How can one create and foster strength and belief in a system that was so utterly and unabashedly abused?

The trouble might lay with ourselves, and, not in our stars…

You raise an excellent point.
Since banking was deregulated, which left no difference between investment banks, commercial banks, and savings and loans, there was no investment capital available for entrepreneurial start ups. During the period of 2000 to present, there hasn’t been any IPOs the likes of Apple nor Microsoft. All investment capital was used in creating debt thru home mortgages.
In other words, no investment capital was used in the USA for the last 8 years to create more production nor industry. All the capital created was consumer debt.
It was completely shortsighted of the congress to allow investment banks to operate as savings and loans. Investment bankers chase high venture capital returns. When they apply there method of investing into home mortgages, you end up with high risk loans.
We have laws because people cannot control themselves when a frenzy occurs. All good sense goes out the window during a frenzy. What has been going on for 8 years has been an investing frenzy. Why people think that they are immune to human nature once they have an MBA is beyond me.
